Call on CU Regents to Rescind Motion on Arabic Word "Intifada" that Threatens Academic Freedom
We, the undersigned, call on the Board of Regents for the University of Colorado System to immediately rescind its June 20, 2024 motion, which inaccurately describes the Arabic word “intifada” as a call for “violence and murder against the Jewish people” and as “antisemitic. . . and racist in nature.”
Intifada roughly translates to “uprising,” or literally “shaking off.” It has been used to refer to uprisings in many contexts across the Arab-speaking world and beyond. In fact, the United States Holocaust Museum refers to the Warsaw Ghetto uprising as an “intifada” in the Arabic translation it employs in its exhibits.
In the context of the Palestinian movement for self-determination, the term “intifada” has been used to refer to the first Intifada (1987-93), which was a predominantly nonviolent uprising against the Israeli military occupation in the West Bank and Gaza. It has since been used to describe other periods of Palestinian resistance to Israeli military occupation. This connotation–resistance to Israeli military occupation–is the well-established meaning of intifada in the Palestinian context, as reflected in various highly regarded scholarly reference materials and academic writings on the history of Israel-Palestine.
The Board of Regent’s inflammatory and false characterization of a word in the Arabic language chills First Amendment free speech, threatens academic freedom, and is itself discriminatory and racist, in violation of the University of Colorado’s obligations under the Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
